32 Harrington Street, The Rocks, forms part of the Reynolds’ Cottages, which have State heritage significance for their historical and aesthetic value alone. The buildings’ rarity and the sites’ ability to yield information about the previous occupation and development of the land further contribute to their State significance.
Reynolds’ Cottages are among the oldest domestic buildings remaining in Sydney, possessing an aesthetic quality which is representative of Colonial architecture.
They are extremely intact and rare examples of the very small number of Sydney houses from the 1820s and 1830s. The buildings have historic associations with a number of early Sydney individuals of interest for their prominence in local dealings in the first decades of the 19th century, as well as to the 20th century social activism in The Rocks through the tenancy of Abraham Mott and family (1934-71) and the advocacy of the Green Bans movement.
