History & Heritage: This former Coroner’s Court is a unique brick and sandstone building with prominent street frontage on to George Street. The building is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. The site is straddled by Circular Quay West, George Street and Bethel Steps. This building has remained the earliest surviving Coroner’s Court in NSW, where some of the most notorious cases were tried. This was also the site of the first Visitors Centre in The Rocks. The lower ground space was originally a Morgue built during the same period.
Building: Approx 221 sqm of interior space. The building is an example of Federation Free Style constructed in 1907. Consisting of an entry porch, centrally placed former courtroom, hallways and witness rooms on either side. There is also an attic space and partial basement along the eastern side. The aesthetic features are exceptionally intact, including original timber doors and windows, and the iconic brick and sandstone arches on the exterior facade.
